What the service provides
GCal’s background data service owns the native calendar and task database used by the menu bar, Dock, widgets, notifications, Shortcuts, and AI agenda tools. The Google Calendar website in the main window is a separate system.
Why cached events may still appear
A service problem does not immediately erase the last successful agenda snapshot. Native surfaces can continue showing persisted events while GCal tries to reconnect. The warning means current refreshes are unavailable, not necessarily that every previously loaded event has disappeared.
When GCal warns you
GCal allows transient startup recovery before presenting an alert. It warns when the service remains unavailable and native features that need current data cannot recover. Accounts settings can show a more targeted status when no Premium-only native source is active.
Recover the service
- Keep GCal open briefly so automatic recovery can complete.
- If GCal asks, review its background item in System Settings and allow it to run.
- Quit and reopen GCal after changing the background-item setting.
- Open Accounts settings and retry or refresh the affected source.
- If the warning returns repeatedly, restart the Mac and contact support with the exact message and GCal version.
